The Gastroenterologist is an educational reference for clinicians. We built it to collect as little as possible. This page explains what happens to information when you use it.

What stays in your browser

The calculators, risk scores, screening and eradication pathways, and the evidence and journal browsers run on your own device. Anything you type into a calculator stays on your device, it is not sent to us and it is not stored off your device.

The guideline assistant

When you ask the assistant a question, the text of that question and the recent turns of the current conversation are sent to our server and then to a third-party artificial intelligence provider that generates the answer. We do not keep your questions or the answers once the response has been returned. The provider processes the text under its own terms in order to produce the reply. We can identify that provider to an institution on request, for example to support a business associate agreement.

Please do not enter patient-identifiable information. The assistant needs only a general clinical question, never a name, date of birth, medical record number, or other identifier.

Saved items

If you star a journal article, that choice is kept in your browser's local storage, on your own device, so your saved list survives between visits. You can clear it at any time from your browser. It is never sent to us.

Anonymous usage analytics

We keep our own first-party, privacy-respecting count of how the site is used, so we can see which tools and pages help clinicians and how much traffic the site gets. On your first visit your browser generates a random identifier, a short string with no name or email, and stores it locally so we can tell a returning visitor from a new one without knowing who you are. We record events such as which tab or page was opened, how long a visit lasted, the device and browser type, the language setting, the country and city our network reports for the connection, and the site that referred you. For the assistant we record only that a question was asked, never the text of the question. We do not store your IP address, we set no advertising cookies, and we use no third-party analytics service. The data is aggregated for our own use and is never sold or shared.

What we do not do

We do not require an account or a login.

We do not use third-party analytics services like Google Analytics, and we run no advertising or behavioral trackers. Our own usage analytics are anonymous and first-party, as described above.

Hosting, fonts, and standard logs

The site is served by our hosting provider, which processes ordinary technical request data such as IP address and browser type in its server logs to deliver and protect the site. Typography is loaded from a third-party font service, which receives the request needed to serve the fonts. The clinical-trials browser and the assistant make requests to external medical data sources to return the results you ask for.

For professionals

The tool is intended for healthcare professionals and is not directed to children.
